Personally, finding periods of growth has been easy for me. I associate these times by remembering the difficulties in my life. Rather than feeling bad for myself, I like to look at how those obstacles challenged me and changed me into a different person. I think it has been easy for me to see how I was before, during, and after the event, and why that moment has been significant in my life. However, it has been difficult for me to avoid cliches. The majority of difficulties I have experienced are fairly common, so I am unsure if that would be good to write about in a college essay.
Rachel, I really love how you have a positive perspective on the negative parts of your life! I, too, am struggling with making my essay unique. Maybe an interesting angle to approach it is how you’ve adopted such a positive outlook even in really difficult instances!

Hi Rachel. I think you’re doing a great job trying to find the positives in some of the negative events you’ve had in your life. As for being worried about writing a cliche story, while I do agree that you should find a way to stand out, I think you should write what you want rather than thinking about what colleges want you to write. Hope you do well on this assignment!
