For my last blog post, I wanted to write about the school year. It’s hard to remember what school was like in-person because I feel like we’ve been away for so long. I definitely miss the normal school days, but I’ve gotten used to online school. It’s been easier and harder in certain ways, but I am happy that I have less exams. This year, I only have one exam for Spanish, which we’ve split over today and the last two days of school. I still can’t believe that I had four exams last year, but I only have one this year. I don’t really have any summer plans to looks forward to, since they’ve all been cancelled. I am definitely becoming nervous about my last year at ‘Iolani. I also can’t believe my time at this school is almost over. I remember thinking 13 years would take so long, but looking back, it’s gone by so quickly. I am definitely anxious about starting the college search. The college counselors emailed us that we’ll know where we are going to school one year from now. That idea still seems so crazy to me, but I’m excited to see where I’ll end up.
Would you rather teach a class in high school or have your parents teach one of your classes?
I would rather teach a class in high school. I would mainly choose this because I wouldn’t want my parents to teach one of my classes. Their work is very unrelated to what I’m learning in school, so I think I would get very frustrated with them teaching me. Although it would be difficult, I would rather teach a class in high school. In physics, we’re doing individual projects and presenting topics to our classmates, so it’s somewhat like teaching a class. I would definitely have to teach one of my better subjects or I’d probably teach like my parents.
What is the last movie you watched and what did you think of it?
The last movie I watched was Iron Man. I had never seen it before, but I like Marvel movies, so I enjoyed this movie. I thought it was interesting to see the special effects in the movie, especially since it came out a while ago. Even though it’s a superhero movie, it still looked realistic. I like superhero movies because it’s interesting to see how different people in society react to them, like some think everything isn’t real, but others support the heroes like Iron Man. I thought Robert Downey Jr. plays Iron Man really well. I enjoyed seeing how he was able to portray the normal civilian and the superhero.
Top 7 favorite movies
The Sandlot, the Avengers, the Greatest Showman, A League of Their Own, Spiderman, Pitch Perfect, Iron Man
As of today, what is your dream job? What do you see yourself pursuing as a career?
Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to study as my major in college, so that goes well with these questions. I’m starting to lean towards accounting or actuary science. Even though these may seem boring to most people, I could see myself pursuing either as a career. Honestly, I’ve never really had an ideal dream job, but I think either of these would be a good fit for me and that’s what I’ve always wanted. In school, I’ve always been better at math than my other subjects, and these majors require a lot of it. Although I don’t have an exact plan, I could see myself studying either of these and making a career out of it.
Would you rather have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
I would rather have unlimited international first-class tickets. I like to travel and plane tickets are already very expensive, so I would want free travel, especially if their first class. I’ve never travelled first class before, but it definitely seems more comfortable, which would be beneficial for long, international flights. It would also give me the opportunity to travel the world without having to sacrifice very much. I’d give up free food at restaurants because I don’t eat out very much anyways. I also don’t think I would eat at restaurants as many times as the cost of one first class ticket, so I don’t think it would be worth it to choose that instead of free travel.
What is your favorite May Day memory? What do you miss most about the May Day assembly?
What I miss most about the May Day assembly is seeing students from all of the grade levels performing together. I thought this was showcased in the May Day court, when two students from each grade would have their own dance. I always thought it was nice for all of the dancers to have their hard work and rehearsals pay off by performing in front of the rest of the school. I also enjoyed the spirit and positive energy that the assembly, and May Day as a whole, would spread throughout the school. Although I don’t have any distinct, favorite memories from the May Day assemblies, I have enjoyed watching them ever since lower school.
What was most helpful about today’s peer conferencing? What are your next steps?
I think the most helpful thing about today’s peer conferencing was The Great College Essay Test. I thought the questions it asked helped me to understand what a college essay should consist of. I also thought it was good that someone else could compare my essay to the test because I’m not sure if I would be able to evaluate my own paper. Although I think some parts of my personal narrative are important, it was helpful for a peer to tell me what is taking away from the main story I want to share. I think the question from the test asking about “so what” was important for me to consider because I included a lot of background information, but this will help me to see what isn’t necessary. My next steps are revising my essay with this test and my peer revisions in mind. I think the main thing I need to work on is deciding what isn’t completely relevant to the story, especially since I’m a little over the word limit.
Fun Friday! If you could choose anything, what would you want the state to reopen first?
If I could choose anything for the state to reopen first, I would want it to be the stores and malls that had to close during this time. Other than the selfish reasons of providing my friends and I with somewhere to go, stores and malls could give opportunities for those who have lost their jobs. It would also be easier for everyone to buy what they want or need, since they wouldn’t have to wait for it to be shipped and they wouldn’t have to pay extra shipping and handling fees.
What is one thing that has changed for you during this time of COVID19?
Something that has changed for me during this time of COVID-19 is I have a lot more time to spend with my family. Normally, I go to school, go to volleyball practice, and do my homework, so I don’t have too much free time to spend with my family. Since my sister came back from college and my mom works from home, the three of us have been in each other’s space a lot, but in a good way. We have tried cooking different things and started watching new shows and movies together. We also have been eating dinners together, which we haven’t done since my sister left for college.
